When someone searches “therapist near me,” Google doesn’t show every practice in town — it shows the ones with a complete, active Google Business Profile. That’s what local SEO for therapists actually means: not backlinks or blog posts, just making sure your profile gives Google, and the person searching, everything they need to trust you’re the right fit and nearby.

Here’s what actually moves the needle, in the order I’d tackle it.

Claim and verify your profile

If you haven’t claimed your Google Business Profile for therapists yet, this comes first — nothing else here matters until you have. Search your practice name on Google, click “Own this business?”, and follow Google’s verification steps (usually a postcard to your practice address, sometimes a phone call). It takes a few days, so don’t wait until you need it.

Fill in every field, completely

Once you’re verified, fill in everything: business name, address, phone number, website, and hours — and make sure they match exactly what’s on your website and anywhere else you’re listed. Google, and potential clients, get suspicious of mismatched information.

Then write your business description in your own words — what you specialize in, who you work with, how you help. Skip the clinical jargon here; this is often someone’s first impression of you, so let it sound like you, not a diagnosis manual.

Pick your categories carefully (these control which searches you show up in), and add a handful of real photos — your office, you at work, your space. People deciding whether to reach out want to see who they’d be working with.

Reviews are doing more work than you think

Reviews are one of the biggest factors in whether you show up — and whether someone picks you once they find you. Ask clients who’ve had a good experience to leave one, and respond to every review you get, good or difficult. A thoughtful response to a hard review often reassures a future client more than a five-star one on its own.

Keep it active

A Google Business Profile that hasn’t changed in a year tells Google, and anyone looking, that it might be stale. You don’t need to do much, just something regularly: post an update when you add a service or a new team member, add a new photo now and then, keep your hours current if they change around holidays. It’s a small habit that keeps the profile working for you instead of just sitting there.

A few things worth doing once you’ve got the basics down

  • Add your services. List out the specific types of therapy or specialties you offer — it helps you show up for those specific searches, not just “therapist.”
  • Use the Q&A section. Answer the questions you already get asked most — insurance, session length, whether you see kids, whatever comes up. It’s one more place for people to find what they need before they even call.
  • Turn on messaging if you’re comfortable fielding inquiries that way, and actually respond when someone reaches out through it. A fast, personal reply here can be the difference between someone booking with you or moving to the next name on the list.

Getting found is half of it

A strong Google Business Profile gets you found. What happens after someone clicks through — whether your website actually helps them decide to reach out — is the other half of the equation, and it’s the part I help with every day.

If you want a second pair of eyes on your profile, or you’re ready to talk about a website that does its part too, let’s set up a time to talk.
